Description
Black Seeded Simpson is a loose-leaf type lettuce with broad, frilly, tender leaves with a delicate, sweet taste. This variety is an old heirloom favourite and still regarded by many as one of the best tasting lettuce varieties.
Uses
The leaves of this variety of lettuce are well suited for adding to sandwiches, eating straight from the plant or using as the base of a delicious salad.
Germination
Sow the seed of Black Seeded Simpson lettuce during March-September in subtropical areas, all year round in temperate regions or from September to February in cold regions. Germinate will be inhibited by soil temperatures greater than 30 degrees Celsius, ideally the temperature of the soil should be kept between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The seeds of lettuces require some sunlight to germinate so don't plant them any deeper than 4mm, firm down well after sowing and water regularly to prevent the seeds from drying out. Leave about 30cm between plants to allow them to grow, thin them out to the healthiest seedlings if they have been sown more densely than this.
Cultivation
This cultivar grows quickly, only taking 7-10 weeks from the time the seed are sown until harvest time. Plant a few new seed every week during the growing season to ensure continuous supply. Easy to grow and very prolific. Lettuces are heavy feeders, requiring rich, well drained soils. Tolerant of heat as well as mild drought and frosts. Avoid watering in the middle of the day.
